Death by bat
So, I'm apparently doing this wrong or missing something. Rolling a Paladin on medium and getting massacred by bats prior to even getting into the first city. Falchion is broken, buckler is broken, no more health potions.

So, someone explain to me how I'm doing it wrong? Because I clearly am somehow. Even chugging stamina potions I can't keep up with the damage bat after bat causes.

I ran into this and I must say that medium is pretty challenging. You're a paladin (same class I chose to start with) but remember, you're a greenhorn. In theory, you may never have actually fought.

As far as actually playing, fear for your life, that may help. What I mean by that is try to keep it 1v1 with a bat. Don't let them flank you.

You have other abilities like Defense, and Bless, and Divine Strike:

Defense will help you take less physical damage but exhaust you (reduces stamina instead of health).

Bless will help you succeed in hitting more.

Divine Strike will help you do some good damage to the enemy at the cost of stamina.

Don't forget to hotkey the small seal they gave you at the start of the game. That seal actually lets you cast fireballs which can roast, toast, and fry the bats in short order.

Hopefully this should help you defeat the bats. Another thing would be to explore the area more fully as there is more loot to be had. Check EVERYTHING. There are more potions out there in that beginning area, don't leave the area, but go as far as you can. Just be mindful of the bats :)

Oh, and yes it does get better once you survive some bat encounters and start leveling up. Remember, they're giant bats. Giant. Bats. :D

Oh certainly keeping this in mind. I have been crawling and 1v1 the bats. As far as actual -skills- to use I don't appear to have anything. I assume this is all passive?

I'm guessing then I should give up on Medium since I've had a few restarts already and simply, statistically speaking, cannot defeat the last handful of bats.

I have an unidentified seal that I can't seem to use. Other than that it's punching bats to death. Already raided the hidden stashes and used the health potions and majority of the stamina potions that were there. Found equipment (yay!) but alas, I can't use any of it till late game it seems (sad!).

Ah well, off to easy then.

Also, holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the difficulty setting differences are huge.

Ah no it's not passive, you have to dig a little bit. Open your Inventory and click the button that shows your Spells/Skills. There's another button on there somewhere which shows all your skills/abilities. You'll find the abilities I mention plus the spells you can cast, depending on what schools of magic you took at the start. The icons are draggable to your hotbar and then you can use them by hitting the number associated with them and right-clicking to cast or attack with that.

Identify is a skill you have, you might try to identify that seal with it. I don't remember if the seal I had was identified or not. I just remember using it, I may have tried identifying it with the skill and it happened to work.

Don't give up on the game altogether though. It's a fun game. Also check your game folder where Inquisitor is actually installed. There should be a couple PDF's in there which help explain the game in more detail and how to access things. I actually just figured it out by trial and error, the manual would have helped if I looked for it :D

Oh, there's also a web site that can be helpful:

I actually read the .pdfs before coming here. Had no idea still that those skills were not passive and required activation for use. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm glad I didn't try to start off with hard like I normally do with other games. Apparently I'd really have to be Johnny on the spot to deal with it at that level lol.

LOL. I figured out early that fighting w/o stamina is just asking to get raped. You should be strong enough to clear them, I didnt do anything special and I had no problems.

Als remember paladins have the repair skill. You should be able to fix all your starter gear at level 1 smithing.

Hmm, bit of cheat I know but if you attract more bats than you can handle, run back to the town guards and they shoot them down.

From what I've seen face tanking is not really ideal even for pally..... what works against most mobs is to hit it and move back till you can hit it again.... just kite most melee mobs to reduce the damage you take. Will save you stamina pots too or broken gear from enemies who damage gear.
