Character is hurt

When the guy I'm using's portrait says HURT and is red, how do I heal him? I have a medical area but when I go to it there is nothing to do even though it says "free healthcare". So how do I cure his hurt status and how do I actually use a medical area?

i think you need a healer. ive just gotten a mission to retrieve a doctor from a location on the map. try doing a few more story missions and youll get the same mission too.

Switch over to another character so the hurt character can rest and heal (it could take up to a couple days, or even more, of game-time for them to heal). Other than that... take some pain-pills (though if the injuries are bad or something severe, that doesn't fix the injuries).

It takes time and is based on in-game days. Every day, there is a percentage/chance that he will heal and will use up 1 medical supply unit in the attempt despite it succeeding or failing.

Upgrading the infirmary increases the chance, and so does having a doctor of some sort.

Make sure you have enough medical supplies and simply wait.
