Into the the main State of Decay folder (it should be the same folder that has the StateofDecay.exe file in it), try putting the following 3 files, from the x360ce package;
x360ce.exe
x360ce.ini
xinput1_3.dll
And that should do it. Launch your game, and if you have the x360ce utility configured correctly, you may hear a "ding" noise when the game loads in, and then your game-controller should work (hopefully).

Just download, un-zip the package, and you'll find those 3 files (as mentioned in my previous post), and simply place those 3 files within the main "State of Decay" game folder.
If you wanted to test it with your game-controller first, you can run the x360ce.exe file and see if all the buttons, d-pad & thumbsticks seems to work correctly. Then close that, and launch the game and hopefully it should work and see your game-controller as a 360 game-controller (well, at least it's emulated to act as one) and should allow you to play the game via your controller.
Good luck.
I realised what I did wrong. I had selected an incompatible preset in the general tab and the controller was coming up 'red' in the tabs menus on the emulator.
Once I selected 'Logitech Cordless RumblePad2', it went green. Obviosuly I don't have that device but the Dual Action gamepad seems to accept it.
I fired the game up and it works! Now I need to set the buttons accordingly throughout the game as I get used to it....
Again, many thanks. I think I had too many versions of the emulator chucked into my SoD.exe directory too so when I saw how you only used 3 files, that pointed me in the right direction ;)
