how do I switch to controll another survivor?

just intertact with them or u can do it from the menu

start to speak with one and use the "I'm beat up, ......" option

The default key in the character panel for switching is Q.
You can only switch to characters who are friends, and only as long as they're not on a mission. And you can't switch characters if you're currently on a mission or in a car.

I played for hours before realizing you can switch directly from your survivors menu ... I was running around in circles looking for people who were not even at my base so I could talk to them ;p Look for someone you can switch to, click on their profile ... if they are friendly status, and not on a mission, just hit Q to switch over.
