How do I build a bed?

The title says it all

I'm not sure you can build "a bed," as in singular, but you can build a dorm-style room at several of the home base locations.

Press Tab, then click on the home/house icon, then find a free space (an empty square) in the visual representation of your home base. I forget whether they call it a dorm or a barracks, but either way, you can build it for 25 construction materials IIRC, and it creates room for more people to get shut-eye when your community grows.

Sometimes Lily will give you a prompt on the radio, telling you that your friends can't get a good night's sleep and are rotating the bunks in shifts. That's your cue to build the dorm or collect the materials if you haven't already. But there's nothing that says you can't build it before it becomes a problem, especially if you're satisfied with your current home base.

Ok thanks for the help, I am currently at the part where a new virus comes in and starts hitting people and jacob is wanting to move. Lily has been pestering me to build a dorm and for the life of me I have been incabable of doing it

You need to build the first tier of it facility first, it's call "Cots and Futons" it does not provide you a bed but grant you "50% chance of preventing Sleep Deprivation", Sleep Deprivation will lower your survivors stamina for a bit, not major impact but everyone will complain that they won't get their bed and will leave. Survivor with "Friend" status will not leave so don't worry, if they want to leave because not enough Bed for them to sleep, let them be eaten out alive by zeds then.

The mission to go scouting for new places with Jacob just requires you to drive out to Marshall and look at two specific locations -- one is a house with a full privacy wall and a treehouse that can function as a look-out tower, and the other is a trucking depot.

All you have to do is visit both places with Jacob -- you don't have to actually move your home base.

Check out the wiki and guides for info on the home bases and their advantages/disadvantages. Some have more space, but are more vulnerable, others have built-in workshops, etc.:
