Why do characters call them Zeds?
In the US = X, Y, "ZEE"

Everywhere else = X, Y, "ZED"

So essentially when people say Zeds they are saying Zs short for (Z)ombie(s).

Does State of Decay take place outside of the US?

Too true. I have heard the term zed for longer than I can remember now. This game using it is simply an extension of popular zombie culture.

Zed sounds cool.

Zee what the who?

Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead.

+1 - I always think of this scene in Pulp Fiction when they say Zed in the game.

Zombies are called alot of different things these days.
Who cares. Oh.
PersonaNonGrata 22 DIC 2013 a las 5:54 a. m.
Hopefully not off-topic, but I have this belief that 'zombies' and all that comes with them are a social commentary on what would happen if civilization collapsed. Replace the 'zombies' with the unwashed hordes of people who are completely unprepared, starving, and desperate. Replace the survivors with people who are either prepared, or, able to take what they need by force. Replace all the crazy violence on zombies with the same violence on people, and you would have socially unacceptable game, but they are zombies, so it gets a clean and easy pass.

Don't mistake this for criticism of our zombie games, books, movies, etc. I am love all of it as much as anyone. I just think there is an underlying message in there somewhere, even if not intentional.

Even Americans have enough taste to call zombies Zeds and not Zees. Zees just sounds dumb.
I sort of agree, I don't think it's about how you'd normally say Z but more about what zombies sort of get called now. Zeds seems to be a pretty popular thing and like you said, Zees sounds really dumb. Since this is a game, I think that can explain it pretty well.

It stands for Zombiefied Dead.

Been called so for quite a long time based on how the english language combines and contracts words (yet we still got redicolously long ones) From early novels of the undead to at least 70's undead movies.

Calling them Zeeds just dont sound right, Zee's sounds like a bar somewhere. The important thing is, do people who say Zed actually get taken seriously. Its amongst the lamer words for them. Ghouls, ghasts, undead, crawlers, shufflers, walkers, geeks, freaks, spooks, biters, killers, mindless, mindcontrolled, lifeless, soul taken, terrors of the grave, the unstoppable, the reanimated, returned, unkillable, blighted.

all that greater than... Zeds

What does it matter Zed, Zee, Zombie ... its a Fantasy game where the undead rise and hunt you for your brains ... If you're after a touch of realism, a zombie game aint the place to look for it ... And as you said "in the US "Zee" ... Everywhere else Zed ... Maybe they want to appeal to countries that speak propa! ... I jest, :p

you know, I didn't even notice it until just now. Being as every show or game calls them something different.

I.E.;

walkers
spooks
growlers
(the obligitory) zombie
chasers

I just thoght it was another name they used for them really
SYSTEM GLITCH 26 DIC 2013 a las 12:04 p. m.
I just call them zombies. I actually find it a little odd when they call them anything else but zombies in shows. I mean really.. just for sake of argument, if zombies did become a real thing, what do you think the odds are that we would call them anything but zombies? All other terms are just a way for hollywood to feel cute imo.
Rax Savvage 26 DIC 2013 a las 12:56 p. m.
well black, in walking dead, zombies and zombie media etc never existed.
