Why do characters call them Zeds?
In the US = X, Y, "ZEE"

Everywhere else = X, Y, "ZED"

So essentially when people say Zeds they are saying Zs short for (Z)ombie(s).

Does State of Decay take place outside of the US?

Its a convention in the genre; z is for zed, the walking dead.

Think his point is shouldn't the characters be calling them Zees since they are American.

What makes you say that?

In real world Yes maybe they should...
But talk about real world in a Zombie game ;)
Fact is games are made for the global market. So usually the aim is to get as many
customers as possible.
And to be honest lets say someone from australia really does not care
how they would call a "zombie" in a god forsaken fictional hell hole (trumbull valley) in Ohio ;)

Trumbull County is a county located in the state of Ohio, United States. The Trumbull Valley is just made up, but the whole county is real.

I was only clearing up what the OP was trying to ask. I couldn't care less what they're called but to say it's a zombie game so stuff from the real world is irrelevant is a little silly. Make the leaves blue and the skies yellow and it'll be ok cos it's not the real world; it's a zombie game :P

It's a minor quibble anyway. I understand your question, but it's like how in TWD different groups call them different things. Walkers, geeks, etc. Maybe one of the survivors in the group is not American, and first started calling them zeds instead of zees. It just caught on.

It's the same as how DayZ is pronounced Day Zee, and not Day Zed. It's just how it is, regardless of how you personally pronounce Z.

They call them Zeds because that's what they call them in World War Z.

I guess you hit the nail on the head.
Just for example in germany cells phones are called "handys"
You wanna know how its started?
Someone started to call it "handy" btw. not even a existing german word (he/she simple
used the english word)
Then more an more people started to call it in the same way.
NOW they no longer sell you "cell Phones" or "mobiles" in germany.
They only sell you "handys" (every commercial, shop, or whatever calls it now handy)
And as said handy is NOT even a german word nor do the english speaking countries use the
same english word to describe a "cell phone"
