My most awesome and indestructible Marcus died, should I even bother forging on?
His death was most unnecessary, he was well equipped and armed, but 2 hordes 3 swat and a feral all jumped him at once at the army base. I felt cheated and robbed, Marcus couldn't use any items as he was getting mauled by so many at once, my attempt to hop in a car just resulted in Marcus being yanked back out, I couldn't even drop a grenade before I was torn in two. Obviously there's still some lessons to learn about this game. I went out on the mission, feeling confident and secure, and now realize I was overconfident, and probably should have been A LOT stealthier. Argh, it's so frustrating, I've already gone and restarted the game twice before due to Marcus dying, and now, just when I thought I had the game all figured out, and Marcus seemed to be able to handle any threat, he gets killed and I'm stuck with a bunch of characters I rarely used and don't feel much connection to again.

I'm on the fence about whether or not to keep this playthrough, or begin a new game yet again (going through all the torturous tutorials again is a major deterrent to restarting). A smaller part of me suggests walking away from the game altogether, as losing Marcus really made me mad / frustrated / sad, and losing Ed, Maya, Cash, etc is really going to drive me crazy...

So, community, I know some of you have lost your favorite characters, yet forged on with the players still left. Was it worth it? Did losing the character eventually become less terrible? Did you start playing with another character that helped ease the pain? Is there a reason to go on?

Honestly I back up my saves daily just to cover myself if something completely stupid and nonsensical happens.

A good example happened today. I was doing an 'Anger' morale mission where I had to clear out a location with one of my friends. We do that and before I can even leave the building to return them home, an infestation spawns in the house literally under our feet. The whole herd just teleported in. Never had that happen before.

Well the survivor I was escorting falls in the mess, and she decides she's going out in a blaze of glory and pulls the pin on the grenade that wasn't actually in her inventory. Just to make sure Maya went with hre I guess. :P

I don't mind deaths due to my own stupidity/carelessness, but that was just random and buggy. Or teleporting magic was involved. Either way, I was glad I had a backup so I only lost a few hours of progress.

But I have forged on with deaths that were my own fault in Breakdown. And it gives me a chance to mix things up again and maybe find a new favorite.

I'd say forge on, bud. You might as well. There's really no point in starting a new game over and over. You'll just ruin it for yourself. Try alternative between two characters and see how their weapons and abilities make gameplay different. You might find something you like better than Marcus!

You might as well keep playing. Gotta cope with it. Happens. Try training a second Marcus, with similar traits, maybe use his weapon too, sort of a legacy :P

I was introduced to horrible loss at Savini, a nice quiet afternoon, where i was just going to the house right infront of savinis with Sam, to set it as an outpost, was even empty already.

I barely even make it to the fence (tall wooden fence, cant see thru), and theres like 5 or 6 zombies jumping over, running to me. I was a shotgun specialist at the time, so i let them all align nicely and BAM, 6 dead zombies. Now 6 more are jumping the fence, wait, its not just 6, its 12, or is that 20? i start moving towards savinis gate, but Sam was exhausted with almost no stamina as it was, can't run.

Turn around, keep blasting them with a russian 12k as i back up, Maya is on watchtower pounding them with a 750 forester, but to no avail, more and more just kept coming. I made it to the gate, but now i couldnt even open it, since there were so many zombies around (and like 2 ferals and a bloater), that pressing E would simply kick a random one, i was stuck, and just died, almost literally, at home.

Curve balls the game throws at you once in awhile, that i rather enjoy, keeps me in check, and from thinking im invincible.

Can be quite cruel. But you just soldier on.

My son had several of those Marcus death-restarts early on. It always happens when you relax and think you have it all under control - the surprise strikes and you realize nasty ♥♥♥♥ happens if you're not constantly on guard. After the third time I kept hearing him chanting at himself when playing Marcus or Ed "don't get cocky, don't get cocky"....

if you don t have at least a second favourite character, restart

but i truly recomand you to pay attention to your early survivors, even drunk ones
try to play them more and when you do try to think of that character
ex
drunk student girl, how would she react?
well she probably is a party girl, so she might panic when she gets hurt or whatever, make your own story according to what happens

one of my favourite characters turned out to be the guy with a hat that has a trait like "butthole"(polite i am)
it was really fun playing as him as he would let allies die cause he did want to save up his snacks

build your own game, make up funny stories, some won t be fun, but you ll surely enjoy at least 3 survivors you d normally neglect
so next time marcus dies, he ll be part of a bigger story, and you ll get over it, cause life goes on(mainly cause you ve got 4 characters you enjoy as much as him)

When my favorite character died, I died with him. Along with the will to play the game after.. This is an acade game at best.. This one just cost 25 bucks instead of a quater. Ill play again once we have State of Decay 2.. Its coming out in March I cant wait.

Copying your save files has to be done manually. The save files are stored in your steam/userdata directory, mine is

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\22166828\241540\local

Just hit the esc manu while in SoD to save and pause your game, tab out and copy your most recent savegame (profile 1 is "class3.0.ulsave", profile 2 is "class3.1.ulsave" etc. When you get upset and ready to take your keyboard and go home, just deletee the current save and rename your backup for that profile to replace it.

Backing up saves takes the point and fun of the game away. For me what makes SoD so fun is that alike real life, you can die at any moment and it can be all over. There isn't any restart button which is what makes it so fun.

In real life infestations of zombies don't magically spawn at my feet. Sometimes wierd stuff happens in this game thats not supposed to. (In this case a house you just cleared magically transforming to an infested one while you're still standing in it) Dying due to a bug isn't fun for anyone. Thats what the Backups are for.

Fought through the feels and had a pretty fun session playing as a few of the other chars tonight. Thanks for the advice, it's still fun to keep the community alive and continue on the story... Just seems like I was more attached to Marcus than other characters. Kinda makes sense, he's the first character you play as, and you see the outbreak through his experiences early on. Still, I'm actually glad I didn't play it from scratch again now.
Love this game, it's like Day Z without the hackers...

You can also alt+f4 just after you died, while still at the dead chars spot. After you load the game back up again he should be fine again. I only do that on obvious bugs though, would really kill the fun otherwise.

Oh, there are a few ways to die if the game wants you dead:

1) Getting grabbed through a closed door by a big un is fun, because you have a good chance to get stuck in the door
2) Getting your car flipped so high, by driving over a zombie, that you fall to death is also fun
3) or my favorite, "falling" down the path leading down from the survey hill, but it sure looks funny
