How do you use them? I have some but I can't equip them and all I can do is destroy them...

Have it selected using mouse scroll, and press F. You can also right click to aim then F.

They're an inventory item, just like firecrackers, snacks, or egg-timers. They do not replace your weapon.

Molotov and other throwable munition depends on shooting skill in terms of using and aiming. Put it in inventory, scroll mouse wheel to make it active. Press RMB to aim, press F to throw it. Enjoy! :)

Better shooters throw it further and more precise, of course. :)

Also the fire follows the direction of the throw, so drop the molotov in front of the target and not directly at their feet or on them.
Edit: The best molotov is called Chemical Incendiary and can be researched in the library so that you can build them in a munitions shop, it has a very powerful area of effect.

Just beware that, unlike most games, molotovs here have a ridicule radious and last too short. You have to almost hit the enemy with it. I often use them only on infestations or when I am in serious trouble with a horde, at which point I throw one on the ground: for some unrealistic reason, fire does very little damage to you, but will kill all but the strongest freaks, so molotovs became almost my default "get out of horde" skill, if all else fails

they also do minimal damage to survivors so you can use them to "help" someone in a pinch xD~ if they are not your "friend" you loose influence but at least they don't die.

Aye, I really wish I had had one when I lost Maya, I was devastated at that loss. Planning on ridding my map of a manifestation next, so armed myself with a couple of these...
