What should I do about Alan? (Spoilers)
So the Sheriff looking fella, Alan Gunderson, decided to kill the preacher without consulting anyone. My options are to kill him, excommunicate him, or do nothing. Can I get any insight from people who have played the game before about some of the potential consequences of these decisions? I'd appreciate any insight!

It doesn't really matter. The base game plays like a tutorial that teaches you the mechanics. There isn't much in the way of choices and consequences.

Alan? Leave him for time being. Campaign story will take you to the point where he got sicked by black Fever (karma maybe from killing the priest).
This point you can either expel or kill him.
I always choose to kill him, at first to get the achiement, other reason for fun.. what else :3

Firstly.. I can say that if you kill him, I'm pretty sure you get an achievement for it however the first time I did the campaign I just threw him out of my community (Since in real life I wouldn't really kill someone unless I really had to)

What, just make the sociopath someone else's problem? If you're kicking someone out for something like that, you're either creating on more zombie after giving him a far less merciful death than a shot to the head, or you're making some other good-natured community go through the same thing.

I've put a bullet in him in one playthrough and I've told him to leave in another. I wish you could just cap his butt as soon as you meet him.

Thing is.. On my game he actually went to live by himself in a lone house. I found him one time just looking for resources after I had kicked him out.

On my first playthrough, I got Alan to follow me away from our home base, and then I used him as bait while I looted a nearby house. He died horribly while screaming for my help.
It was worth it.

I litterally laughed at this one! I need to try this on my next play through! :D

He typically gets black fever after killing the preacher guy, so you can just put him down. You'll get an achievement, plus expelling him puts down community morale (I think), so it'd be the best option.
I remember when I was about to shoot him he just knelt on the ground before me with his head down, ready for me to end it... made me really feel bad for the guy (despite him being an ass for the majority of the time I knew him).

My first playthrough I didn't shoot him, and he left on his own. I found him in a house where he sent up his own enclave. I got a mission to help train his enclave, then nothing else. He had disappeared after a week or so in game.

No matter what you do he dies unless you abuse an oversight, or the game randomly decides to send him off on his own. Even if you ignore him, he eventually runs off and commits suicide. Actually ignoring him is probably the best option as you get some extra dialog from it.
