I'm excited for the game but... Phone.
Hi !
I'm not here to know either or not you care about having to use your phone.
The fact is, I wanted to buy this game on console to play a nice couch coop game with my husband, but then I find out about the fact that you need to use your phone to actually play ?

We use our phones way enough as it is to my tastes. I don't want to have to use a phone, instead of controllers and transition menus to play a couch coop game... (Gloomhaven works perfectly fine in coop without having a second device to control or ready your own character).

So, what I want to know, is : Is this feature optionnal ? Or can you absolutly NOT play the game without using your phone ?

Thanks !

It acts as individual menus and controller for each player, so it's required.

I don't see much of a difference of "being on your phone too much" and then sitting down to play a video game on the TV. It's the same thing.

I just don't like how much time we spend on this, and having a multiplayer COUCH game where each play on his phone instead of actually sharing screen and controllers, just doesn't sit right with me. It's fine if it sits fine with you though.
I mean, I don't imagine playing Mario Kart with 3 friends on my couch, but everyone plays on his own screen. It's good for range gaming, but when it comes to couch coop, it just takes something away, IMO.

Not to mention :
- I need to have my phone near me (which I don't always have when I'm home, I like to let it aside as much as I can)
- I need my phone to be connected for it to work with the game (since I haven't seen anything about offline playing ? But I might be wrong) which means : I can get bothered by calls, texts and spam.
- Finally, I live in a place with hight winds and often the network is down. Which means I cannot play the game whenever I want, because of the phone connection feature, even though it's an offline game.

Again, you don't have to share the feeling.

You do share the screen, your phone is to manage your inventory/plan your turn etc.
It's actually nice because you can be doing your own stuff while the other person is doing their turn on the screen.

Can't speak to the connection issues, but I never had any issue with that.

Thanks for the precisions. :)
You don't know if you can still play the game if your internet and network are down ?
Because it happens quite often here, so it would definitly work against the game for me. ^^

This is an easy decision: Nope.

The game looked awesome, but mobile requirement, that just sucks. This is the definition of overthinking and trying to make a cool game.

Yes. They have stated that if you have a router. And a stable inter network connection. That if your phones and device are connected. You dont need internet to play the game.

Yeah, how dare they try to make a cool game.

This aint it, my guy. Not everyone is eager to put their personal info/data at risk. No matter how cool a game may be.

What are you even talking about. This has nothing to do with the thread.
Also, if you have ANY app on your phone, it takes more personal info than this game does.

The fact it's a requirement is fairly prohibitive it's not like they had to - it could have been an option - I don't like the idea of playing on a cell phone, games on cell phones often feel physically uncomfortable to play for any length of time to me.
The option itself is fine I think- I agree it's useful for competitive games like Talisman where I might not want to show all my spells to other players. It would feel less intrusive if it was optional is all.

It makes it different in a similar way to vr gaming, where I own a vr headset - yet I might not play some vr exclusive games because of having to use the vr headset where I might have played a non-vr version of it.

How is having a phone prohibitive?
Having a phone is nothing like VR.

Not necessarily prohibitive due to the lack of ownership of a phone. Most of the population has one I would assume even though that's also the case - but rather the will of the person to install an app on a separate equipment + being forced to actually use the phone to play the game are 2 different things people might not want to do.

In my case, I won't be purchasing because it does not feel comfortable for me to play games on the phone for extended periods of time. Just having the option not to would be an accessibility option.

As I said - I have a VR headset - there's still game I won't purchase just because they are VR. I do not want to have to wear a VR headset to play them due to the physical discomfort of it.

I believe you can use a tablet if the size of a phone is an issue.
I thought the game used the phone pretty well.

I hate phones, but this is absolutely different.
You don't "play on your phone". You play on the TV/monitor, and you use a touchscreen based controller to manage your turn.

The touch based controller is a smartphone, for convenience since quite everone have ones, that's it.
