If you are unaware. Then let me explain it. Couch based games are designed so that everyone in the same room can be a participate in the game without the need of everyone owning the game or a device to play it on. Only 1 person does.
However with everyone sharing the same screen. The info displayed on that screen must be visible to all. To eliminate the need for 4 people all trying to access a menu about their character info and abilities, and taking away the action of the game, the phone is used to help mitigate that congestion of info. So that only the actual gameplay is displayed on the screen and everyone can enjoy the game.
But couch games have evolved since their first concept. Now we have things like steams remote play, and discord. So not everyone has to be in the same room to play the game. But that doesnt change how info is displayed on the main screen.
You comparing this to gloomhaven is like comparing apples to oranges. Gloomhaven digital wasnt designed as a couch co op game.
People use their phones everyday. And when it gets turned into a controller, they lose their minds at that concept.
If you are unaware let me explain it to you. That saying is talking about comparing 2 things that are not the same however these two things are quite similar. You see in both situations the idea is that multiple people play on the same screen together. We did this with great success with a game that you say yourself wasn't even designed to do so and how sad that is that this game that is designed to do it does it worse.
What happens if Tim doesn't want to install a silly app to his phone just to play a game once in a while, or if Susan has low battery? Well with a game that makes sense you would use a controller or keyboard and they could just play the game. Now you would say "well the game isn't designed to use those inputs" and sure thats valid, however thats a design flaw.
When you say people lose their minds at the concept of a phone controller you clearly don't understand that if that is such a sticking problem for them then that will be an issue when you are trying to sell your product to those very people. For this reason I think the game will be a flash in the pan at best.
The only reason I got interested in this game - and why my partner & I have played the demo multiple times already - is *because* of the phone controller. It's an incredibly unique concept for the game that it uses to great effects.
Also, your examples don't even make sense. What if the controller for Susan isn't charged? What if Tim doesn't want to buy more controllers & have them sitting around just for when his friends come over once a month? You can think up random problems for literally any device, what's different about the one almost everybody has on them anyways?
Ah yes passing a mouse and keyboard around is so much better then everyone having their own controller.
You are listing off problems which are easily remedied. You are telling your friends we're playing a game which requires a phone, and will be played over multiple sessions. And your telling me your friend purposely came over with a low battery? Or doesn't want to install the app?
That's like showing up to a DND session and saying I purposely didn't bring my character sheet or dice.
You say you will buy the game because the phone is the controller and good for you however i'm quite certain more people WONT buy it for the exact same reason. Myself and the 3 people i usually play with will not play the game.
We will see quite quickly how that works out i guess. The entire point of the post is to leave feedback for the devs and by the looks of it I'm certainly not the only one that feels this way. If you chose to play the game or not couldn't matter to me less. Enjoy it or dont i'll never know.
You come across as very rude and condescending. This is not the best way to give feedback.
Also, how is it worse for solo? I've done a run of the demo solo with 4 characters and it played perfectly fine.
Why would solo people avoid this? You can play the game solo with 1-4 characters.
Also using a phone as a controller is no different then using Mouse and keyboard, or using a handheld controller.
1) Buying a game is a choice. They chose phone as their controller as a medium people can choose if they want to play or not.
2) This business model has worked for other games like Jackbox. The developers are experimenting and trying this out for the tabletop genre. Kudos for taking a risk and willing to be innovative.
3) How is this game any worse for single player than any other tabletop game like Gloomhaven and For the King 2? Is it somehow worse for solo play because of the phone... really?
How exactly would you do something like that without each player using their own phone ?
Demanding that the host has enough controllers for everyone is going to be a bigger barrier to players.
Then there is the hidden information element. Stuff on each player's phone can be hidden from the other players. For example, players can look up rules without disrupting everyone else. Not letting people see which card they are thinking of playing until they play it.
How would you replicate that without each player having their own screen ?
Tim can install the app. Play the game once or twice. Then uninstall it to free up space.
As for a low battery, sit Susan somewhere where she can have her phone charging while playing.
And you clearly don't understand this game or that not every game is for you.
You've come, you've complained, you've had some people agree with you, and you've had others disagree with you. The game is releasing how it was intended by the devs, if things change in the future to include your requirements then feel free to circle back here, but otherwise recognise the game doesn't do what you want it to and go play one of the other tens of thousands of games on Steam and elsewhere.
Sticking around to argue every point however, absolutely makes it look like "I'm not trying to convince you to not buy the game.".
I personally cannot wait for this to come out and I hope its as good as the Arstechnica[arstechnica.com] review says it is.
