The phone/tablet being the controller is our way of incorporating personal stats and information into one device that is personal to the player in a way a regular controller wouldn't be able to adapt. It's understandable that that's not everyone's preferred way of playing, but we are promising that this is not a mobile game, and the controller stays at that, a controller.
Please let me know if you have any other questions, I'd love to answer them!
On PC, can we just use mouse and keyboard? Just have character stats and info on a button like TAB or I like most RPGs have? Are phones the ONLY controller?
If you are wanting m&k, your gonna be disappointed. This isnt "like most rpgs". Its designed to be couch co-op. That is their vision.
If this is the case, then I hope the game didn't cost much to make because I doubt they'll get many sales. Restricting the main way to play any game on PC is a major turn-off for most PC gamers.
Games like jackbox don't have this issue and they use the same setup
Completely different type of game, and generally cheaper to make. Try again.
I'd like the dev to respond to my reply, not you. I'm genuinely curious why they've chosen to NOT allow KBM on PC, even with Online play.
Because you think it has typical "online play". It doesn't
It's a couch coop. Sure you can play online with others if you use steams feature of streaming the game or through discords streaming or whatever. But it doesn't have true online play.
I will ask again. Why the choice to remove traditional input/peripherals in place of a very un-intuitive design? I know the game is intended to be social, but that's what Discord voice chat is for.
If it's only intended for people who can be in the same room, then wouldn't these people just play a normal tabletop RPG?
For Sunderfolk, using the phone interface adds a layer of depth to the controls, which allows each player's personal information to be rolled out when needed. This means while someone else is in a combat turn, or speaking with an NPC in town, other players are able to do the same without cluttering up the main screen.
For instance, in combat, say a Bard is taking their turn. The Rogue can scout the battlefield, look up which monster abilities are tied to which monster, or even look through their skill cards without interrupting the flow of the main screen. And this works for all players playing, so when it's their turn they're ready to go!
This also allows for seamless play for couch co-op, as not everyone may have all the controllers needed to play, and for online to have all of their information saved per person.
If you want to learn more, I highly recommending checking out the Reveal trailer! It goes into depth for why phones were chosen, as well as what the goals for were for the team. It's interesting stuff!
But why no support for any other inputs? Why deny people who may play on separate computers/consoles the right to use their own normal inputs? Why not allow people to just press TAB on their keyboard and pull up the menus that you've described while their friends are taking their turns?
All I'm seeing is defence of the phone, but no real explanation as to why there's no support for other traditional peripherals as optional inputs. The fact that I can't get a straight answer just makes me think this is some spyware for the phone.
How would they? They arent running the game also. Only 1 person is running the game on their computer. Everyone else is connecting to that game screen with their phones.
This is why I brought up Jack box games. Not everyone runs the game to play. 1 person hosts it's. And everyone connects with their device to interact with the game.

The game was designed with a phone/tablet in mind - It can do what other inputs cannot, and allows seamless gameplay between any console as there is no need to change different inputs per device. Though there are no plans right now to support physical controllers, I still appreciate your note. I also understand that you may not find this answer satisfactory (and/or that you may have a different vision for our game), and I respect that.
Please rest assured, though, that our Sunderfolk companion app only collects data related to game itself (that we can then use to improve future game design and balance). The data is anonymized and not associated with any specific player, and is privacy-compliant by default.
Thank you so much for your feedback, and I hope you have a great day!
Love the Idea here, but all my friends agree with the complaint that the Phone/Tablet MUST be the controller. Looking at similar games like Gloomhaven played online with friends I would suggest placing that personal stat / info on a tab that can be viewed as an Option for Online play. This vastly increases the accessibility literally to a game that MUST have the Phone/Tablet requirement.
Just my 2 cents, I would recommend the Dev Team really give this more thought as an Option.
