A few consolidated tips and tricks (growing list; feel free to post here!) when playing HOM:

• Treasure: Money can be made as the secondary effect of many professions; money is also required every turn for other professions (e.g. Merchant). Keeping a reserve and a positive cash flow can be as important in HOM as keeping a positive food balance
  
• Caravan: every so often, it offers large quantity of food at discount (Fruit is the cheapest food item caravan could sell, at only $1 a piece). Buy some and save for the long winter!
  
• Ranchers breed animal: Ranchers (as a hidden ability) will grow all 4 types of animal at a very slow pace. However, if you have several, they can add up, paired with shepherds and wool collectors and other livestock-growing professions, you could have a steady source of income and/or food
