Usually you won't have to break a rock before drowning but I do think in one of the further alley sections you do. Go fishing, too. You will need the island fish, at least the three main ones inside the Tomes. Also, most of the little island spots? You can stand on. Wait until you get to the Lava Area with moving stones. Check out YouTube videos if you get stuck. It was a bit of a nightmare for me.

You can access hard to reach books/chest by hitting your way through the mines to an exit on the other side. There is no other way to access those cliffs. Carry about 150 candles at least. You can use candles of a different color only if they are for the level before. It can help to use other colors. Such as Yellow in Forest, than Green also in Mountains, but you cannot use Green in the Home Temple. At least that was how it worked for me. It will take some time to find the exits. Each island has a mine we have to hack our way through to get to one of the books there.
In tomes try not to step on cracked blocks. Those send down rocks to knock you back. Like learning to use those cubbie holes to the sides when dealing with those razor wheels. Often you are meant to stop and hide before reaching the other side to get the timing right.
