also Kronos has the right idea, move your rabbit/chicken houses near the middle of your farms to keep them from foxes, that way they will leave their huts and start working.
Because their description says only that they eat bettles
but its very easy to overlook because most ppl dont read the lil item descriptions in their inventory when holding the animal.
It requires Tilled Wet Soil, and they have to bed fed. Mine produce fertilizer everyday. I have pigs in there own area, with a medium sized sprinkler plot, it stays wet, and they have food, so they always produce it.
Have you planted something or just used hoe and added sprinkler?
I just give them a mud pit to use ( Soil and Sprinkler ) also in the tool tip ( i think ) it mentions they will make Fertilizer in tilled soil, and occasionally ginger. ( Both requires them to be fed ).

100% Reccomend making a "Pig Pen" ( Soil + Sprinkler + Trough with hay ) Moe pigs the better. I mean, you could always go and farm the wood from each every, every few in game days. But an auto source is so nice.
To get eggs from chickens you need to build tray in chicken pen and put food inside.
