How big is the inventory? do you need to make the storage chest?

It's infinite. There is a chest blueprint but crafting won't automatically pull from it.

You will need storage for some areas since mobs make you lose stuff in your inventory.

Not lose just drop out which you can pick up again
And you can't build any buildings except start location
