If you have the dog, instead of swapping them from your inventory for getting the daily orbs, you can build the little log house for them (cost 500 at the merchant with all the blue prints).
I am going out on a limb here and am goign to say Archaeolgy is a MUST to find some other luma eggs as only that will allow entry into some dungeon rooms where i expect some books and eggs will be found.
You get 2 items each room that are used to make up recipes for the profession.
The only real difference it makes is you have a limited number (the amount depending on your whip level) of lives to clear each room in the temple, and if you die more times than this you lose those items for that run.
