Bug: customers requesting sold item from display mat - with a twist
Hi all! Having a great time with the update. Am running into a bug that I seem to have been able to replicate about 3 times now: Occasionally, items I've put on the display mat fall back into my inventory (e.g., upcycled human sword, necklace). In each case, I've pulled it back out of the inventory, put it back on the mat, and sold it to a customer, but after that, I get multiple customers admiring the display and then asking for that sold item (or a part of the item) - I had about 4 or 5 customers admire the display then ask me for a human sword hilt after I'd sold the sword, even with multiple other things on the mat.

Previously, exiting the game and restarting seems to have fixed the problem, but I just started the game for the first time today and my very first customer admired the display and asked for a necklace (which I sold while playing yesterday, but which had also fallen from the mat into my inventory). It's almost like after something falls, even if I put it back out, a phantom version of the item remains on the mat.

It may all be some kind of odd coincidence, but it definitely seems strange that the items customers keep requesting are specifically those that have fallen back into my inventory and then been sold.

I'll keep poking away over here and will update if anything else odd or magical happens. :)

Edit: Item size doesn't appear to matter - stuff that's fallen back into my inventory pouch now includes items as large as the upcycled human sword and orcish dagger to tiny items like rings. A couple of other notes: all items that have fallen in so far appear to be upcycled, and I've noted that even if a small item is placed squarely on a part of the mat, it will still fall. With a fully-upgraded mat, the inner right small square is one location that things have "fallen" from.

hmmm this is very odd and a really impressive bug to catch - we'll log it and figure out a fix! Sorry about that, must be quite annoying to have while playing!!

Thanks for that! A couple more bits of info that are hopefully helpful in tracking the issue down: an upcycled teapot fell from the display mat into my inventory and the usual, "Nice display...gimme a teapot...gimme a container..." started happening. After selling the original teapot, I still had a couple of other containers and another teapot, none of which I put out on display, but when I provided these to customers, the bill of sale indicated that these items had been displayed and I received increased funds from the sale, so it really does seem like the game is perceiving an item to be on the mat, even if it's fallen off/been sold and is somehow extending identification of that item to other items that match what the customer is seeking.

At least a couple of times now, the issue has persisted across play sessions on subsequent real-life calendar days (most recently, I had people seeking the phantom teapot over the course of the last 3 real-life days).

Additionally, and this is more speculative (I'll need to test more), it seems as though the phantom item finally "disappears" when everything else on the mat has been sold. If the issue occurs again, I'll try removing everything from the mat to see if that fixes the problem, or if we have to let the economy run its course and wait for the mat to clear through selling everything.

I'm glad I read this thread earlier because I've just had it happen to me also. Simple ring with an attached gem (because those sell very nicely), didn't even notice it missing from the display because I had a few rings up, noticed it later, put it back out and sold it, customer on a different day asked for it.

This is getting worse; I got lucky enough to have 4 customers in one day but they ALL asked for the same item that had been sold from the mat the day before; a teapot (which incidentally launches itself off my mat more often than most things). Replying to this again just to keep it up there.

I'm having the same issue. Almost every customer is complimenting the display and then asking for something that fell off the mat that has already been sold. So I can't sell anything that i actually do have.

It's happening to items that were upcycled and ones that weren't. The item also doesn't need to go into my inventory to get the bug. I had a wooden horn fall from the mat just onto the table and am experiencing the bug with it.

Removing everything from the mat doesn't fix it, and I haven't been able to replicate selling everything on the mat to see if that always fixes the bug like it did for Abhelica.

I HAVE been able to sell everything from the mat and it doesn't fix it at all; I have had to exit out to the menu to 'reset' what is and isn't on the mat as far as what customers see and even then, that only seems to fix it most of the time now.
I've just run into the same issue. Displayed an upcycled beaded necklace, customer bought it, now people keep asking for it. I wasn't able to find another one, so I keep on having to dismiss customers. :/

That's a shame. The exiting and reloading hasn't fixed it for me. Love the game but will have to pause playing until its fixed as I can't sell anything.

Hope this thread is kept near the top so others can avoid using the display mat for now

I would say to anyone reading this: you don't HAVE to avoid using the whole mat. I find the other thing that works when exiting to the menu doesn't is to just... slow down. Keep one customer at the window wanting the thing you don't have anymore so people stop bugging you until you build your stock of items back up and fill the mat with more things you DO have. Then dismiss them like usual and carry on. There's no time pressure, rent isn't due, the devs are aware of the issue and surely have to have fixes in place by 1.0 (in which they've said save files won't be able to be transferred anyhow so we'll all be starting over) so your mat isn't going to persist. Eventually people will ask for other things on the mat, even if they do keep being annoying and also asking for the things you don't have. The game isn't unplayable because of this bug so far, just has a hiccup that needs fixing.

Ok, sorry about the silence - easter weekend in Europe meant 4 days off for us in the UK.

The source of the issue is indeed the Display Mat bugging out when an item drops off it.

The workaround is:
1. Make sure that the item is off the mat
2. Restart your game (main menu > quit)

This should break the loop.

Sometimes it doesn't, and customers still ask for the missing trinket. In this case:

3. After restarting, make sure to dismiss the customer to fully clear the issue.

Fingers crossed this works for now, and if confirmed by ya'll I'll make a post about it.

This has worked for me! Thank you!

I think the mistake I made before was moving forward in the day before restarting

Awesome, glad to hear it!
