I don't think you can, yet, unless I haven't figured it out. May have something to do with the currently disabled Move Silently skill.

I know this is a long ways away from when you posted but use the surgeon skill to save him. Right clicking something or someone in the game will tell you a description about them, often letting you know important things like that!

Not true, if your outdoorsman skill is high enough you can rescue them.

A ridiculously high outdoorsman or surgeon skill is needed. Too high for your characters usually at the time you encounter it. The best solution is to stop the plant growth first then you'll be able to rescue all the researchers.

I've never tried it with Surgery, but Outdoorsman works as well since that's what I've always used. I wonder if one of the skills has a higher success rate than the other.

My character had Surgery...2, maybe? And Intelligence 10. She succeeded just fine. You don't need to have skills that high. Just gotta distribute your skills among your team intelligently and recognize the supreme value of having a team where everyone's got Int 9, for 5 skill points a level.
