At the Ag Center I managed to pick up a scientist who has those skills thankfully.
"Play however we want" my ass. The combat isn't good enough to justify playing this game, and if I take any other skills I feel penalized as there is nothing but fights.
It's all about balancing your rangers. You work in a team, so whatever ranger you have as your medic, you want them furthest away from the enemy supporting your other rangers.
And you are playing however you want. It's just the way you chose to play cost one of your ranger's lives. The wasteland is very unforgiving
Thanks, this has been a real eye opener. I was confusing an rpg with a third person top down shooter. My mistake.

I thought it'd be common sense to bring someone who has some medic abilities, you only need to get your surgeon to level 1 which only costs 2 skill points to be able to use a blood pack to bring someone back after being downed.
Well all is not lost yet, if you level up and get 2 skill points on someone, you can add surgeon level one to that person.
Also a speech based character is quite useful to have, they can allow you to talk your way through some combat encounters and they can also get you extra items/weapons, for example talk to the guard at ranger citadel with a character with 2 points in hardass or (i think) smartass and you will get a nice surprise.
Part of the fun in a game like this is to try out different combinations of skills, and either get killed or triumph over adversity.
If you are looking for a good starting party however I would suggest a balanced setup, personally I go with a "face" (speech skills/leadership/pistols), a melee character with brute force and weapon striping/making, a "scout" (a ranged weapon skill, lockpicking, safecracking, perception and outdoorsman) and a "medic" (a ranged skill, field treatment, Surgery, Synth Tech, Hacking and toaster repair). I have had a great deal of success with this party on the highest difficulty and have not permenantly lost a ranger yet (with the exception of a tpk against three very poweful robots).
