If he dies for any reason, keep the medalion he's carrying. It can be used to open a safe later. (The safe can be opened through the usual means, so not a biggie if you dont get it)
I think its mostly an homage to Wasteland 1. Night Terrors were things you fought there with rediculous HP scores, and looked pretty much the same (alien with dolly). Near as I can figure, he doesnt do much besides look adorable and take naps when you feed him.
At this point if i run into anything strange I can't figure out I just assume they put it there to troll the player because they seem to love doing that. Like with that evil slow turtle in the rail nomads camp.
