Don't undrestand red baychowski quest - find sierra madre

I really don't understand this quest - first i thought he said the wreck was in the graveyard but it is elsewhere. Second he dies too easily (robots killed him) so when I did find the wreck the quest updates to 'we found crack in canyon' but it never closes; third other than a screwdriver there isn't anything there. Am I missing something major ?

it's not in Damonta. I won't say any more but It took me a lot for this quest :) Maybe you have a bug?

The screwdriver is in a locker, which is in the same room with a toaster
I actually hate this mission because Red died everytime I fought those 2 giant robots in the northern part of Damonta, so I went to silo 7 first to finish this quest. When I came back, every NPC in Damonta was dead cuz I didn't kill the tinker before leaving.
