how to use explosives? (TNT, Grenades, Pipe bomb. etc)
do you put them in a weapon slot like a gun or knife, or do you put them in an action slot like a medical kit?

I had Angie go rogue and throw something explosive, which I think was TNT she was carrying, even though she had wench and rifle. I couldn't get it in one of the bottom action slots, but her throwing it when having 2 dedicated weapons makes me ask.

Also, if you put it as one of your weapons, is there any way after you throw and then have an empty hand to put a weapon back in that hand? If you have multiple of the same type, does it 'refill' automatically?

If you don't have a gun in a slot it has zero ammo and requires a reload. If you have like 3 grenades and use one a new one should automatically pop in.

Put them in weapon slot.

Yes, you can go in your inventory and put a new one in for no AP cost, or switch to your secondary. Yes, it refills.

Far as I have found you have to swap out a weapon to throw an explosive... On the upside it doesn't cost AP to change out your equipment or hand thigns to other chars in range. Just open the backpack and do it, which sorta feels like cheating being able to pass my first person to go a grenade from my slowest char so they can throw it before the enemy responds. But it works.

As to NPC Companions throwing them when the go out of control I don't know. I give my NPC Companions only enough combat equipment that they need to do their job andn othing extra (unless juggling handoffs in combat). Had too many "other" games where the NPCs suddenly run off stealing all my gear to trust anything thats not permenantly mine :)

Slightly related query: is there a way to lob grenades without having to target a NPC? It's frustrating when you have 3 NPCs near each other but none are in the blast radius when you target one of them but are if the grenade was lobbed in between them.

Hold Control and you'll get a red area of effect indicator for the explosive you're carrying. Then just left click where you want it to land.

Use free aim by clicking the big square weapon button, you should really learn how to use free aim for things in this game like destructible cover/"Hand over your money or you're dead!" situations. Theres a lady in titan canyon that gets mutilated if you don't use free aim to save her.

If you click on the weapon image at the bottom middle you can free aim grenades. You can also free aim any weapon with this, allowing you to shoot explosive objects and destroy light cover when in combat.

Ok, I feel super stupid now! Thanks. Knew how to do that with regular weapons but had cognitive disconnect with explosives...

As far as I can tell, the main penalty is that if you unready a weapon and put it back in your backpack, it's automatically unloaded. If you draw it outside of combat you'll automatically load it again, but in combat you draw it empty and it'll cost AP to do so. So, if you have the choice, swap out a melee weapon or a gun that's already empty.

I had never tried to swap weapons beyond the button that switched between primary and secondary. Thanks a lot!
