Shu-Model Ranger Combat Knife
Says it has a 70% chance to cause "opened up" - Is that just another word for bleeding or is there a debuff called opened up?

Save your game before buying it, then test it on one of your own squad members and read the debuff description.

ah I see, same icon different effect. Thanks for the above tip, didn't think about attacking my own guys to test it.

Ah I see it's a bleeding effect that doesn't expire. "The notch" has the lock effect which takes 1AP and last about 40 seconds. Pretty neat!

That... does not sound terribly impressive, unless it's unusually strong bleeding per second or throws in large stat penalties.

A rifle which did that would conceivably be brutal early on -- in particular, there are pod people sometimes that you can shoot without even triggering combat mode if they're far enough away, and they'd effectively become one-hit kills.

But a knife? If you're in melee range, you need them to die quickly, not slowly bleed to death over a long time period in which they're still able to readily attack you.

Yeah the knife itself isn't very useful at all.. it may be ok when you're fighting raiders with 10 health near the citadel encounters.

Aye the knife is extremely underwhelming considering what you need to acquire it and when you acquire it.

With grip is 2AP to swing. Unlike other effects "Opened Up" stacks. In theory against a very tough mob you can add 4 bleed a round, every round. With a skilled blade fighter who crits often and almost never misses, this can be a great weapon. I personally used it as a secondary. If I ran into a mob that would take more than a few hits from my main weapon, I get to working with the blade. You can also build a toon with very high AP around this weapon. Move in, strike, move out.

How dare you bust the myth that AR's are the only weapon to use! That's just rude! ;)

That's how I was using it for my combat-surgeon (a fitting "tool" for him, I think). It was particularly amusing against the honey badgers. They wanna play slicey-dicey, okay, we can play slicey-dicey!
