XCOM2012, I enjoyed, but you are naive if you honestly believe they couldn't have done it better with a bit more depth and pleased just as many fans.
FF has more and more gone towards simplifying their games, and I would say it has hurt their franchise...
Same with Deus Ex...yes good game, I enjoyed it as well. But walk up to enemy, press button = IWIN...play any way you want, but this way if you want 3 times as much exp...could have been better.
To clarify.
Turn Based is something that was heavily used in situations where nothing else was feasible.
Turn Based at its core was a way to simulate combat, and is no longer needed by nearly as many games as it once was.
So if you are going to use it, it only makes sense that its because your game "takes advantage of or needs it".
Because if not as you mentioned its ends up a pointless combat system.
Ogre Tactic LUCT was a great game, much better than FFT in my opinion, and yes a bit over most western players, but if shortened up a bit and certain grindy parts reworked some...a game of that type could succeed.
Does the movie industry ALWAYS pander to the masses? What bout books? Music?
Gaming is the only industry that does to such a high degree now a days, but thankfully for the PC owners, indie gaming is changing that.
I call it fear factor .
Oh I played ogre tactics all of them , yeah some of them were beter then Final Fantasy tactics .
But cause of the way story line was set , the way you recruit special characters who are memorable , but combat system was about the same .
Now I already said to gather to the masses make a godmode for them , be done with it .
For those who just want to follow the story line , Mass Effect , Star Craft etc all made a easy mode , just go one step beyond that .
Solves all the hackers and cheaters demanding hacks and cheats .
Just make a godmode , and let them rofl stomping trough wasteland , ad a achievement I am proud to be god .
done deal so people can focus on normal gameplay content , and introducing tactical combat
That makes people feel unfair but satified when beating it .
You know what is the most beardy oppenent in xcom , the sectopod !
Why cause it was buffed so beardy , 50% damage reduction more HP -50% to hit .
But people just couldn´t one shot it fast enough , so offcourse people would take damage .
But it worked , see that is what happens when people ask for harder .
They just ask for more HP oppenent , longer lasting fight , but not what banner saga did .
A boss that can 1 shot anybody . longer fight simply put means more chances you will get attrition damage .
But I want something more , I want a fear factor . something even in bardstale , wasteland .
You target that group before the others . in bardstale it was mages who causes curses or group damage . in wasteland it was the ionbeam people .
I don´t know maybe make some nail bomb grenade throwing bastards , that won´t kill but wound everybody . so all fire is directed into taking that one out .
Before you priortise another target . sometimes you need to let him hit .
Cause no other way to avoid being killed .
He insults your intelligence. Accuses you of lack of research. Talks down to you as though he is superior to you. Insults your intelligence again, including a sarcastic winky face this time for good measure. Then when you respond to him in kind, he immediately cries "trolls".
Sounds about par for the course.
But I'm sorry to inform you, fanboy Palad1n, that it's just a little too late to jump on your high horse there. Now shut your condescending jackass mouth up and try keeping your posts relevant to the topic of this thread. An obviously titled thread in which, despite making two long posts chock-full of ad hominem attacks, you have somehow managed to not say a word about Shadowrun or XCOM. Perhaps you'd like an achievement for that feat. Something like "Aspiring Forum Troll" sounds appropriate.
Ah yeah :( you want a hard challenge , and don´t like RPG focus .
Well very few games like XCOM out there currently , only one that comes near the difficulty of XCOM remake , is Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 . even they have some RPG elements in them .
I can´t recommend any other really fast pace xcom like TBS games with that fear factor .
Space Hulk is same as the board game , Arma Tactics is maybe more your liking.
Yeah see if you can find a demo of arma tactics , it did keep me entertained for a day or 2 .
Or else try frontline tactics (don´t buy cash , it is a simple system of scaling when you scale , so scale with a whole group or none )
But sadly you can´t find currently anything near XCOM fear factor , that is why I love XCOM remake , it has something totally addictive and almost impossible to reproduce .
Since you are not so interested in RPG parts . of fetch and deliver quest .
I can´t really say what else to recommend .
Wait longwar EW mod is out in beta . have fun :D
I totally forgot XCOM longwar EW mod is out there and working they say :)
No DMS was too easy , I finished that in 1 day . so that is true , dragonfall is bit tougher .
But not that tough to give you a challenge like xcom .
Cause dragonfall starts tougher but ending is easier then DMS ending .
I can´t think of anything that can really give impossible xcom players a challenge .
Other then if you like RNG games , then try Age of Decadence . it is hard cause it is too much RNG for my taste , but others love it .
Try the DEMO . the developer is quite devoted to make it really hard as possible .
And some fights you are not suppose to win cause the RNG are seeded .
Just wait. It seems deep until you realize most stuff is laughably bad, and there is a rather narrow spec.
And many abilities that seem cool end up being overly difficult to use..but when you do use them well...they seem very lackluster..
Xenonaughts.
Try that one.
Shadowrun Returns/Dragonfall are great and well worth it. Also make sure to go to the workshop. There are some super user campaigns in there. Try Nightmare Harvest!
As for the Xcom's I liked XCOM2012 & the original both well worth the time and if you're really digging it Terror from the Deep is a blast too!
Xenonauts is also a must buy IMO although its in early access it is a fantastic game and a true worthy successor to the OG Xcom. Dont mind playing early access here as it always takes a few restarts in xcom games to figure out how to properly play them :) I've got 40 plus hours on this one and have barely opened up the research tree. Game is nearly finished according to the devs..
Like you I'm waiting for WL2 to get closer to completion it looks like its shaping up to be a great game but 60 for early access is a bit rich for me plus I would like this one complete before I start/dont want to spoil story.
I also have Xenonauts. Great game that is almost finished and is one of the early access success stories, imo.
Absolutely agree.
