Play wasteland 1 or nah?
I only see wasteland 2 and 3 on steam. Is requirement to play 1 to "understand" 2? Or is it more of a "civilization" style of sequel (make new story, but only important element to progress is mechanics)

no you can play 2 without any trouble. Not really even the same game. It's like comparing final fantasy 4 with final fantasy 7.

More like Persona 1 with Persona 5

Wasteland 2 follows the same continuity as the first game in the series (what little of a plot the original had) I am not sure that Wasteland 3 will follow the same plot as 2 but considering that the Desert Rangers are going to be relevant in 3 shows that it may be a direct sequel

Skip it. Unlike older titles like baldurs gate, Wasteland 1 didn't age that well

The remastered brought the graphics up to acceptable. The story and the gameplay is still fun in Wasteland Remastered after 30 years. I'm on the last mission and have had a blast. 105 hours into it. Wasteland 2 I have over 250 hours. Fun games if you like the classic RPG stuff. To the OP, Wasteland Remastered isnt necessary to understand WL2, but it's a fun game. Pick it up on sale for $10 or less if you like old school classics.

Wasteland 2 has a whole lot of references to Wasteland, but it's not necessary to play the first one to pick up on the story.
