I imagine you got the normal ending which yeah its pretty bad. Thankfully it is not meant to be the canon ending. Try doing Second Dawn as it is a much more fulfilling conclusion to the story and the intended ending. Or just look it up on Youtube lol.

While I haven't finished the game yet, I've found the story and characters to be interesting so far. They hint at plot points without giving everything away in a lore dump. The main story itself is unique. The characters themselves are interesting, especially Shirley.

As a vehicle to move the character from area to area it could be much, much worse. If only the voice acting were a little bit better.

I got the true ending. Was kind of lame if you ask me. And I actually enjoyed this game. For the first like 3/4th's of the games story I was right there for it. That last 1/4th though at the end there was like "that's so dumb... but they're so cool! But that's so dumb!". It's literally just the plot of the Matrix but if the robots in charge were Special Needs kids, complete with helmets.

There is only minor variation in dialogue for all three endings. Bad ending is "you are a failed experiment subject and the Earth is screwed, we are leaving to have fun". The other endings are "you are the successful test subject and we are going to take you to Mars", and "you wish to spend more time with human? ok nvm since you defeated us"

How does it not connect to the main plot? It's not abrupt either since they've been building towards this since like the halfway point in the story. In my opinion it's a direct through line from the beginning to end.
The ending isn't great because its executed poorly and ends on two really bad bosses, but the plot itself is sound.
