In the big room with the void on the bridge with a pipe and the two other voids in the back throwing rocks in this zone once you get past the robot past all the other enemies if you look at the door where you need to go to in order to exit you will find that there's another door underneath it, there's a platform to the right of it just drop down there the door you need to use the key on is in that section along with additional gear and stuff

Yep, I just replayed the game and was mistaken. I thought the shortcut door used that key. I just came here to delete that comment. It seems Laughing Kookaburras answer is correct.

i found the arboretum. its in the swamp area. but the locked door is on the back side of it and im not sure how to get there. i assume its a path from a different area

It's accessible after you unlock Spirit Dept with a lot of exploration and dropdown.

Where exactly? I've been looking all over the place but didn't find a route. I'm assuming your route leads to the "knight" right in front of the entrance?

There is an invisible bridge that leads to the middle tower. Its on one of the red platforms and is right before you drop down to the necro area.
Hopefully that helps. It took a stupid amount of time for me to find because I didn't expect something like that in this game lol.
