To be safe, only save when you're in a safe place and not moving. Use only the menus when saving.

No, they're saying that you DO want to ride the snake. They're telling you it's there to help you. I haven't gotten to that part yet.

I've seen it on a Twitch stream, riding the snake sends you back to the beginning of the game.
