How do I grab the treasures?

OK, I've only managed to grab the last two ones, so I obviously never got to visit the final level, could someone give me a few pointers on this? From what I understand, when an action prompt flashes and there's also a treasure on screen, I need to hit FIRST the direction of the treasure and the prompt immediately after...or am I getting it wrong?

Like in the very beginning, the golden arrow appears over my head, but if I hit "Up", Dirk never picks it up. Same with the bow immediately after, I hit "right" (it's to my right) but nothing happens! Is there a special default "pick up treasure" button?

What am I missing?

By the way, I think this is the best of the three Don Bluth games released on Steam thus far. Very vivid and quite imaginative set pieces and the treasure hunting gives you a lot more replay value!

i don't have this version but you don't have to press UP AND the action at the same time, just press UP, an animation should start letting you see you grab the item, then the movie restart a bit earlier and you will do the move to continue, don't do it togheter else you will probably cancel the grab operation that way and you will not get the item.

oddly the game only lets you grab the treasure once per playthrough, apparently, though I think you had to grab the treasure every time on the arcade game if I died and had to start over...anyway, it might not be letting you grab the treasure because you already grabbed it once

Got them all and yes, it's once per playthrough. They keep appearing, but if you push their direction, you just lose, since the program knows that you've already grabbed it once. If you hit "ESC" in game you can see which ones you've already got.
