So I've grown in love with this charming little gem. any other hidden gems similar to Cabernet?

I'll start by recommending Unavowed , which has great writing in a mythological setting of sorts. I've had similar feelings playing cabernet/Unavowed

I can only recommend games that I have played and wrote a Steam review for. Feel free to go to my Steam page and find my reviews for these games.

This list goes from Least to Most similar to Cabernet:

- "Life is Strange (the original one, Complete Edition)." An award-winning episodic narrative game, with a female protagonist and a rather dark storyline. Has some horror elements in the end. The time-rewinding mechanic means it's easy to redo your choices if you make the wrong one.

- "Strange Horticulture." A very atmospheric mystery puzzler. Don't be put off by the cell-shaded-animation-style graphics. There is a story there as well. If you like it, there is a sequel planned, "Strange Antiquities".

- "Death and Taxes". I haven't got a review for this one, but I really enjoyed it! The gameplay is similar to "Papers, Please". You are the Grim Reaper, sitting at a desk and deciding who to kill and who to spare. Despite the theme, the atmosphere is mostly lighthearted, even humorous at times, although some of the endings are very dystopian. Again, don't be put off by the graphics.

- "Will: A Wonderful World". An interactive visual novel where you change some words on a page to influence the outcome. Make sure you unlock all the endings - every main character has several endings, from "Best" to "Worst". Warning: Even though the illustrations are PG, some text descriptions and themes could be very disturbing!

- "The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante." An interactive visual novel. Multiple endings, stylish graphics. Romance, politics, revolution. Multiple moral choices too! This game was made by a Russian dev team. Both the English localisation and the Russian original text are very well written - I've played both. If you like it, there is a sequel planned: "The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian"

Whichever game you pick, they all have great storylines!

Tatiana, these are great! Thank you! of course i know life is strange, but the others i've never even heard of..

Strange Horticulture - Art here looks very similar to cabernet! fantastic!
Death and Taxes - what a premise. HAHA
The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante - I think i'll play this one next (after couple more rounds of cabernet), for some reason i am drawn to the style.

i took a little peek into your reviews. i must say that's a impressive amount of games you've played, reviews done..

If you liked Cabernet for the dialogue and psychology, check out Slay the Princess.

I Remember watching something of it when it was out, but i remember reading it was quite short ( only half an hour to get to the end ?)
Is it still the same Aejiou? i remember seeing some news regarding they improving the game in some ways, hopefully more content and such?

They released Pristine Cut last year, and there are so many, many endings. Reaching each individual ending is not too long but it branches out so much. It's what Cabernet lacks in my point of view, the variety of outcomes. With nearly 200 achievements to unlock, surely it's meant for more than half hour.

Also, when I asked for recommendations of similar games, someone mentioned
Vampire: The Masquerade series. But I only got Swansong since I hate fights and all timed action in games in general. I didn't play it yet but graphics look nice and the setup is interesting. More RPG elements it seems. Wait for the sale though, Steam is having something vampire related soon.

In general, I fell for Cabernet because it reminded me of the games I played when I was a kid. Retro 2d adventure games like Simon the Sorcerer, Kyrandia series, The Curse of the Monkey island, and etc. Quest games, that's how they used to be called. They stopped making those kinds of games nearly completely at some point and I stopped gaming as a result, but now with all those indie game makers visual novels are having a comeback.

Also, Little Misfortune? It's nice, funny and dark at the same time, but I made a mistake to watch it on YouTube and once you play it once there isn't much else to discover.

@Aejiou: Slay the Princess is excluded from my Steam preferences, due to nudity. If you like that artstyle, and spacial puzzles, you might like "The Bridge". Or an episodic narrative game called "Bear With Me". There's also the "Broken Sword" series, but check the system requirements - the older titles in the series may not be compatible with newer versions of Windows.

Steam excludes too many games if that nudity flag is enabled. But it's definitely not meant for kids due to its dark premise and philosophic themes.

Hmm. maybe what i watched was one of the shorter endings! and i see its voice acted just like cabernet too. thats big!

I quite like VTMB ( bloodlines ) its one of my favorite franchises. I haven't looked into swansong though.
if it helps with VTMB , there are many way for you to completely skip 99% of the fights in the game, with conversation skills, plus stealth vampire powers such as invisibility. I've replayed it couple of times in my life.

"Little Misfortune" this seems very charming! thank you for this. one of the tricky things about the visual novel typish games are, that many looks great, but writing style would not always be great! one way to get through that is ask for recommendations from others who love the same games as ourselves. So thank you!

regarding the point and click adventure types. i agree with you! and its such a great thing to see that indie developers try thier hand with it. Cabernet ended up being such a good surprise and it brought back my love for the genre.

Make sure to throw glitter everywhere, makes everything better! And is important for a sweeter ending.

“The Wolf Among Us” is the only one I can think of, since it’s choice based and kind of the opposite of Elizaveta she’s a vampire, and "The Wolf Among Us" features a werewolf. I don’t remember if it has stats like the game Cabernet, though.

It doesn't, but a fantastic recommendation! considering i already played it. and would gladly vouch for it!

There are two more games I have found. I have not bought them yet, but you might want to take a look:

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood: A game about an exiled witch and a Behemoth. Quite dark in terms of both graphics and story. Some themes may not be to everyone's taste. I have tried the free demo, and it will be on sale until the 24th of this month. I found the card crafting mechanic rather clunky, but I still recommend the game for the excellent quality of the writing and an unusual premise.

Coffee Talk: A relaxing cosy game, where you are a barista, making coffee for customers and listening to their stories. Nothing like Cabernet in terms of gameplay, but the setting is modern-day Seattle, in an alternate reality where supernaturals and humans live together. I have seen the first 10 minutes or so of gameplay, and the Steam trailer - the supernaturals include demons, elves, orcs, and dwarves. among others. So a good choice if you like that kind of setting. I'll be eagerly waiting for a sale on this one!
