Now $10 does seem steep, BECAUSE it's old to ME! I played it out about 10-20 years ago.
BUT if they like to play it then they are getting their moneys worth. And there's likely a lot of hardware CS source will run with on perfectly. It's what 15 years old? The hardware to play this game and this game is what many players can afford. And they are happy to have it.
There's still a new market for CS Source. Same for Team Fortress. It's always new to many newer players.
There needs to be a barrier to deter hackers, CSGO handles it differently - sure the base game is free but there is still a paid tier and other things that keep hackers away from the core player base.. CSS doesn't have that kind of protection.
How about just making some of the game files available (textures, maps, ect) free, and keep access to play the game as it is (paid).
You can't trust people as far as you can throw them. All you can do is give them liberty and set traps to catch them in the act.
So you must ask yourself , do people really trust you or do they trust the traps they have set in place to catch and expose you once and IF you attempt to violate the boundaries? ;) You're either smart enough to avoid the traps or you're not. But by the time you walk right into every single one because it looks to easy and safe ... it's already too late. A bad reputation is earned, the same as good reputation.
