OS - If Windows, EVENT VIEWER will have stop signs for every crash, pertinent details of the crash in Windows there.
Steam logging yes.
Steam also has crash logs.
And your Developer Console may also be displaying critical info on whatever is causing your crash.
However, due to the RANDOMNESS of the crash. It sounds like something local system related. Perhaps hardware related. Like an overheating GPU, or failing hardware.
Event viewer is my goto resource under windows as an Administrator to nail down any crash bug. However, Gabe & Co. have some good tools built into Steam to help troubleshoot as well.
In the future. Just VERIFY FILE INTEGRITY before completely wiping an install.
