The longest outage was only a few seconds...
That is the challenge with unofficials. The server group could just be a few people renting some maps and get bored in a few months and stop renting. Otherwise it is a longer running community cluster.
Either way hosting is expensive and more so with ASA taking 2-3x the resources per map than ASE.
This. You'll hear a lot of people say unofficial is the only way, and then you'll see them a few months on here posting upset because their unofficial server vanished. On top of the fact they'll be incredibly confused about the base experience and progression of Ark, due to inflated rates, and each unofficial typically having pretty different settings versus the next one.
You will see unofficial servers in here recruiting all the time, and players saying unofficial is the only way, because it's losing players and just as hungry for more of them as the other servers. There are larger server caps and potentially some other changes on the horizon, and it may help since a small chunk of ASE players were holding out for maewing equivalent on vanilla, etc.
I think there are some groups that unofficial is probably great for, but if you're one of those people where Ark is the only thing you can even enjoy for the past few years, then I personally think official is actually the best way to go.. I started on Aberration, worked over to SE, and then did Extinction all on official.
My GF plays Astraeos now on our official, and I maintain center / se / ab / extinction. Solo can take a while until you figure out your system, I think a solo player should focus on gathering harvesters and one good fighter before focusing on boss progression / muts.
Once you have an anky, and something like an arg or kark to carry it, stone, flint, obsidian, crystal, element ore and gems on ab, crystal, oil rocks (even thatch, berries, seeds and wood, to a lesser extent than some other options)...it's all covered.
Official modded is also especially a joke to progress, because OG ASE players are just claiming all the spots they failed to claim on ASE here, and cheesing content with Moro Rexes. In addition to the fact you get a cliffans storage with 200 slots for some hide and wood at like level 1 or 2. I'm not big into moro's because I like the vanilla options, but I see people trade for them the first week of a new official modded server all the time, for basic stuff like ingots and crystal or some element on the newer maps (extremely easy to farm on extinction and Astraeos, especially with a mantis, once you clear veins).
You wrote too much bro.
And derailing the purpose of what this thread is about anyways. I was trying to figure out why my favorites just disappear. And elaborated why I thought it was the server itself, based on an ASE experience.
Official is not the way to go. I don't have infinite time or patience for taking 50 stones at a time on an anky at 2 miles per hour to my base. I play this game like an arcade game and enjoy it, it's not some realistic survival horror.
