Unofficial dedicated server not showing in list - solved

I was having a heck of a time with my server suddenly never showing up in the unofficial server list.

I tried all the usual things:
* Recheck/remake port forwards (even though they were fine just the day before)
* Run an update script with steamcmd to update my version
* Make sure windows firewall wasn't blocking anything (it was turned off)
* Make sure my ISP wasn't doing any NAT craziness (I could run a web server and port forward and see it from outside)
* Wait several minutes for my server to show up in the list (it never did)

Finally I noticed that my server console showed "Ark version 39.6" and noticed that others' unofficial servers were version 41.25 and 41.28. "Huh, why am I stuck on an old version? I ran updates."

Well, the install/update using steamcmd at the command line was for some reason not actually updating my copy in my usual server directory.

So I backed up config files (start-ark.bat, Config/Game.ini and Config/GameUserSettings.ini) and my Saved\SavedArks\ScorchedEarth_WP directory.

Then I went into steam and changed the filter of what games to show so it also includes "Tools", searched for Ark, and installed "Ark Ascended Dedicated Server" from there. Wait a bit. Manage Files > Browse Local Files.

I put my start-ark.bat in place and started the server; it registered after about 5 minutes! I could see it in the list! Shut it down, put my old saved game in place and my game configs, and restart. Wait a minute, search the server list, and it was there.

I've been fighting this problem for a week, and it basically came down to, what I thought was updating my server software version was failing to update it. Now that I'm using the steam GUI installation, steam can manage updates for me, and I'm not using a separate install directory, so it should be more reliable on future updates.

what dd you mean by this?

Im having trouble done everything but i still cannot get it to show on the list it comes up on a external ip on the search but not the list.

any ideas?

You do so in your LIBRARY, up top it has 2 boxes, one says Games, and its a drop down menu that you can pick other things also, click on tools, and under the ARK Ascended game itself you will see the Tool in question.

(I know its a necro, but if it helps someone, its worth it)
