Officials will be similar to ASE with poor server side performance issues.
If you are interested in checking out a long running PVE group hosted out of the Chicago area on high end private hardware (not nitrado) you can check out my cluster. I have been hosting ARK maps since August 2022 so there is no risk of the maps suddenly shutting down (rental groups). I do not think there will be many clusters running on the tier of hardware that we have ($28,000 - 96 core @4ghz - full NVME storage at 15,000 MB/s reads / writes) so the map performance is very nice with no rubber banding.
Search in game for "[PVE]JurassicArk". I currently have two maps in a cluster and will add every official map as soon as it releases. The cluster is still growing but it is very common for the cluster to have 10-15+ players on during peak times and everyone is friendly.
We are a no wipe cluster but there is player decay to keep the map clean for inactive players so that new survivors are able to find an area to build a base.
The maps are below (mods listed on the battlemetrics site)
https://www.battlemetrics.com/servers/arksa/24434495

But if you have a job, avoid official. And if you want to make sure your game stuff doesn't get lost, rent one for yourself. Don't rely on others for your game.
I do agree with this. Renting / owning the server is always the safest option. The major challenge with this though is cost. As more official maps release if a person wants to be able to switch maps and go back and forth in a cluster this becomes quite costly over time just to play ARK. At the cheapest rental option (20 slot) a single map costs $24.99 per month. In order to run the two current maps that is $50 a month... when The Center releases next month the cost will be $75 a month to be able to hop between all three maps.
Once the maps are no longer being paid for I am not sure if Nitrado just deletes the player data or allows a copy to be downloaded to rent again at a later time restoring the progress.
I have never rented from Nitrado and always hosted on privately owned server hardware.
End of story.
I completely understand. I do have regular daily players from the Netherlands as well as Brazil. The ping surprisingly has been really good on the cluster for players outside of North America and I have been very pleased with my fiber internet provider.
Where ever you end up making your home I hope you can find a place to enjoy ARK on.
I am active on the cluster and try to resolve any issues in a reasonable amount of time with continuous plugin development and improvements.

not to drag a dead post but man do you have a discord for the server?
The discord link is in the server MotD.

I played official a long time in PVE and PVP, and ultimately found the modded official cluster to have the most consistent and mature collection of players. There is rarely drama, and when there is, it's a very small community, so people who cheat or cause issues get blacklisted pretty quick. The Discord is incredibly organized, as well.
On top of that, EU and NA play on each other's servers pretty often. Once you're a month or two in, you'll know some EU players and NA players, regardless of which side you start with. Right now on NA extinction modded, I believe one of the EU tribes is leading in terms of progression. On top of the fact that moro rexes and a few other cool tames exist, in addition to the other stuff. Moro rexes make a lot of the endless wave farm things people like right now a joke, with enough bred and imprinted to hold the line. Especially with how borked the giga and carcha spawns are, on Extinction, specifically.
I personally like Karks, so I stay on Ab and run surface while I try to finish off my muts for my fighter karks. We also get the modded maps like Atlantis, Nyrandil more recently, and a few others, with standard transfers that open on those a few months out, just like normal map transfers opening, following a release. We additionally tend to have info and updates on bugs or maintenance from the devs directly very fast, because some of our modded players are connected to other people like Nekatus, and are connected to one or two devs.
The most OP thing on modded official isn't even the tames, it's getting a cliffan's wardrobe with 200 item slots at like the first or second set of engrams on level up, and storing everything much faster as a new Bob getting set up, and farming everything in sight.
I've never looked back, the people I met in standard official were hateful and seemed really young / immature. There's a lot of server crashing and duping that isn't regulated, as well, when people turn on their 200 lights with a remote switch to crash ping and other forms of trolling. They'll call you pay to win and shame you for finding the experience in Ark you actually want, but you can just ignore the mods besides skins you like, or "ascend" to not care what they think, because that type of behavior comes from being bitter / unhappy, anyway.
