is it possible to pick up an anky with an argy in single player i tried but it didn't work while the wiki states that it is possible

Regarding the Ankylosaurus, was it already tamed? Because if you're on a PVE Server or running PVE Settings by yourself, you can not pick up wild animals on PVE. Can only pick up tamed dinosaurs.

no it was a wild one is there a setting for that i need to turn on to be able to pick them up in pve

If you play on a localized version (in German language for eg.), and you have activated "PvE Mode" in RULES - WORLD you cannot pick any WILD Dino with the Argy. Only tamed dinos you are able to pick up. If you switch to english language it works. For me it's a bug, I already reported in the bug tracker:
