Help?Question: Can I start a new map without starting over?

I get the impression that in order for me to play one of the other maps beside the Island, I lose all progress on the island. Is that correct? I want to try the desert map, but I don't want to lose all of my progress.

To clarify, I don't care about starting from scratch on the new map, but if I go back to the Island map, that stuff is all gone forever, right?

Yes I have to start over and I can't go back to the old map, or yes, I can back to the old map with all my dinos and structures?

the saves should be world specific, so scorched earth will have a different save file from the island, and so on.

I wuld just start a new one, i yesterday lost my 105 character when i forgot something in the desert and then wanted to go back to the center....its now at an obelisk, unusable...i can drag it around with my new one but dats abt it....also when u transfer u somehow lose the right and membership to ur own tribe AND beside that, u will hav to make a new character first + make ur way safely to an obelisk before u get urs out

yes, you can.
you go to an obelisk with everything you want to take with you (armor, weapons, tools, dinos). then you put everything in your inventory (armor and quick slot items), open the obelisk and transfer everything from the inventory... but be careful... not in the tribute tab, but in the inventory tab!!
and don't forget to put your chibi down and transfer it from the cosmetic inventory.
if you take a dino with you, its inventory must also be empty and the saddle removed (it also belongs in the obelisk's inventory tab).

then you go to the creatures tab in the obelisk and you can upload the dinos first.
lastly you upload yourself.
then you see the screen where you can download a survivor.
here you click ESC until you land in the main menu.
there you go back to single player and open another map.

When you get to the spawn screen, you can download your survivor and spawn naked and without anything.
So you first have to find an obelisk from which you can then download your items and dinos.
Or you build and use a transmitter in creative mode.

If you want to go back to the old map... the path is the same... and you will find everything there as if it had been left behind.
