Unofficial servers I like to just put a few points into my food stat so I can neglect my dinos more.
Either way if you join a tribe you won't have to worry as much about it because someone can take care of your stuff when you're offline.
So it looks like nothing much has changed in that regard, kinda stupid as the average holiday period is around two weeks, I would think.
7 days to me is ridiculous although I do get that nobody wants servers full of inactive players bases and dinos etc, but 7 days!
I did think about carting my laptop around as you suggest but decided against that as I don't think I should have to give up potentially valuable space/weight just to avoid what is, to me, an utterly stupid game mechanic.
If Wildcard used their brains a little they could have some kind of holiday pass, that I/we could buy for a few £'s to extend that period by say three weeks or so, I would have been happy to pay a fiver to be sure my base remains as i left it while I am away.
We are getting cryopods soon so you can cryo your dinos and avoid them starving.
