Private Servers
So has anyone had any real success with making and running a private server on their own hardware, can join it on LAN *and* from other networks, all without sucking off the Server Monopoly?

yeah, the DRM was removed weeks ago.

ASMA is in development. SteamCMD works great as that's what i use. There are external server managers out there but i haven't tried any since SteamCMD works.

The favorites is broken and you need to search in your favorites for the server every time. You also need to search in the unofficial list sometimes after your server has an update, for some reason it either gets removed from Favorites or the server isn't detected as the same... ?_?

Yeah I am using a cubecoders AMP and have a template that works. Had a private server up for weeks for friends and family.

...So the fact that my friends can't join my server remotely is an issue on my end, as opposed to something more nefarious?

I've set up a server on an Ubuntu 22 server I stood up using Proton. It's working, but the server doesn't populate in the server list until you search for it. Otherwise it runs well.
My understanding is that you have to install some certs, but I'm not sure how to do it for a windows server running in Proton on linux.

Yup. Usually router/firewall related. I disable Windows firewall (not recommended) and open the correct ports 27015 and 7777 (default ports, both UDP) on my router. Always make sure your server is updated too as no one can see your server if it's not updated properly. Some minor versions don't matter for the server though.

Also helpful to have them verify they can see your server on the unofficial list. If they can't, it's likely a router issue.

We reach a point where my friend can see it and click on it but then times out, consistently. the Problem is likely something in Windows Firewall then?

Could be. Try disabling it first and see if that helps. I had to disable it on ASE to get into my servers but needed to have it enabled for ASE on Xbox/Win10 (not the same as steam version)

For ASA i just disabled it again because im too lazy to troubleshoot it.

Setting up a server in ASA is almost identical compared to ASE if you do it the traditional way. The only difference I've noticed is increased resource utilization compared to the older version, but nothing despair inducing.

I think my server uses around 10GB of RAM to run the server on average.

As far as joining goes that just involves port forwarding and a basic understanding of networking. It's actually way easier to find your server in the list now since when you search, it will specifically poll the servers with your search criteria first now instead of sitting there waiting for all the other servers to load.

no issues running dedicated here other then stupid amount of client crashes and (server crashes now and then).

I've had the same issue for days now I just gave up from trying only reason I was trying is because the tether option seems to not work on non dedicated

If the firewall is open and clients still cant connect check your port forwarding on your router. forward and open 7777,7778,27015,27016 as tcp and upd just to be safe. Also I had issues running it on other ports. It seems to want to use 7777 and 27015 nomatter what you set it as.

I have used AMP for ArkSE, and Rust. Do you have a method to get ASA working with AMP specifically?

So to report on my last bits of testing:

Disabling the firewall made no difference. Then I remembered what I had determined when I tried hosting servers in ASE; that my router specifically was blocking traffic to my server, a known issue with that specific model. Back then we had to just deal with that since I couldn't change the router at the time.
So today I asked the account holder of our wifi for permission to look into the router situation. I was successfully able to replace the router with an updated model and save a few bucks on the monthly bill. I finally tested the server itself with MultiHome and mods properly configured, and my friend's mom was able to join and get to character creation! I think I can call the setup a complete success.

Thank you all for your help. Now we go to prepare ourselves for ascension. :D
