it's not a redownload, it checks all game files after the update again to not get errors

No you dont, it's just validating 78 GB. Shouldnt take longer than a minute or two if you have the game installed on a SSD with a decent CPU

Next time you do this pay attention to what it says. It does a DOWNLOAD phase then a PATCHING phase. It says this on the client.

You only download the patch but it has to be patched into the full game.

There is not a check happening, but a reinstallation of all game files. These micro patches, 300 MB each, kill your SSD to ♥♥♥♥, overwriting 80 GB of information on it every day

Don't you know how patches are installed on Steam? A temporary folder is created where the entire game is reinstalled after a patch of any size, then it will replace the game that you have installed in the Steam folder. This is a vicious system that reduces and wears out the resource of SSD drives. When everyone had HDD about 15 years ago, it didn’t matter, but now in the era of SSD it has an impact and is very critical, but not everyone thinks about it and not everyone knows about it

How strange that my 8 Years old SSD is still at 98% health....

Wear out is not a problem anymore

Why is this topic still reoccurring? Do people still still not understand how Steam works? The downloads page clearly shows the download and unpacking/writing process!

Lies I’ve been running my pc with a m.2 and sata ssd and 2TB hdd for 7-8 years straight running ark servers and installing and playing hundreds of games with a reboot couple times a month and transferring very large astrophotography files very regular and I’ve only lost 1 hard drive which was the HDD

SSDs do garage cleanup all the time they are way more reliable quit spreading lies

Yes Tach, we've both seen that for years on the Ark Survival Evolved forms and still do :P

Because we are constantly gifted new people who would rather complain than actually read the screen

I figured with the advent of containers and IoC with steam that there would be major improvements to this entire distribution, patching and validation process; but it seems it's still fairly raw and unoptimized.

I suspect it's opt-in features for deployments/publishing and it's this game is not configured well by the studio. For instance, for this game (and certainly not ever game on steam) the download file size is nearly 100% of disk space. I can't imagine what the reason is for not compressing these files for download and uncompressing them thereafter.
