Metal tools have a better chance at getting rare resources, the high quality stone pick will only end up breaking the rock faster, which is why you might get more metal or flint per swing, but the metal pick will end up harvesting more resources, especially metal. I'd say use the stone pick for flint until it breaks, or use it as a weapon.
But of course, nothing beats the anky and argy for getting metal on the Island
Tested this a lot in ASE and ASA.
