i am confused about how loss of items on death works

so when i die, one of two things happens

1. i can run back to where i died and there is a bag and i can recover my stuff. i interact with bag and i get my stuff back

2. when i run back to where i died my dead body is there but there is no bag, and as far as i can tell no way to recover my stuff. no way as far as i can tell to interact with the dead body.

i cannot figure out why #1 happens sometimes and #2 happens sometimes. it is really starting to become frustrating when #2 happens, because it means i have to start from the beginning again in terms of making gear etc.

If there's a bag its because some carnivore came along and ate your body. If there's a body you have to hold E on it and then select inventory or harvest the body so it turns into a bag. It defaults to E being grab body which I don't remember being a thing in the original game so I hope they fix that.

sleeping bags only one use you need to make a bed at base bag are there for you feel you going to die doing something put it down or a few like cave runns i use 3 to 4 bags

1 happens when a carnivore comes by and eats your body

For 2, you can still loot the body but for some reason the interaction "hitbox" is absurdly tiny, just keep searching over it until you finally find the info pop up, then press F. Took me like 5 minutes of spamming the button over my corpse in order to recover 2 artifacts...

good info. thanks all i will try some of this. it is one thing to die and then run back to your body to recover .. . but it is a lot worse when you run back to your body and you cannot recover anything

There is also a 12 min timer , depending on setting's

If your body is not interactable, try punching it once. This worked for me.

There are some good mods that retrieve your stuff automatically and you click on the mod's tombstone back at base to collect what you were carrying.
