You want to know why they removed the tether distance which I ain't a fan of, it's because people was crying about the 300GB file size which was mainly the maps being uncompacted hence why ASA is only 70GB... thank the community once again they love to ♥♥♥♥ things up without thinking of others, so now you have to rent a private server or host a dedicated server to have the entire map with your buddy.

See above there's nothing a modder can do since it requires uncompacting the entire map or having a seperate machine and trying to host a non-dedicated server.

It can't be fixed. People have asked for this for 8 years (on older version of ARK too). It is part of the design. If you don't like the tether, you can run a dedicated server (although it is not as simple as tethered).

Tethered was added for those that can't figure out how to run a dedicated server. It is better than nothing, but really, the other player is playing in your game. The game does not and can not render in parts of the map you are not present in, hence the tether.

So figure out dedicated or live with the restrictions of the tether, those are your choices.
Ummm no? It's a toggle on unreal. They could turn it off and you'd have no performance loss as long as the Host Pc can handle it. All it does is run the game in Non dedi mode, It still renders the entire map and ai. O_O Single player and Non dedicated are two game modes. One only renders whats around you the other renders the entire map regardless.

As for turning it off you'd have to access the dev kit. I don't think it's in the Ini files, It's Dynamic host tethering or something like that in the dev kit.

Regardless of how far down the rabbit hole you look it's a pretty stupid tool to use.
@Des debateable tbh, I disagree there's a reason why old ark is 128GB-300GB and this is 70GB

Does this work to remove tether? (assuming you can't change it to high enough in game):

Open the file browser on your computer:

Navigate to:

(Drive Game Is Installed On):\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ARK Survival Ascended\ShooterGame\Saved\Config\Windows

Right click on GameUserSettings.ini and "open with" Notepad

Under "[ServerSettings] there should be a command ListenServerTetherDistanceMultiplier=<X>

<X> Might be a low number. Change the Value of <X> to something a lot higher than the game allows you to set.

I've been poking around the forum and it looks like this is possible like it was in Ark survival Evolved, but do not know that for a fact. I'll link the thread I've seen that talks about these settings.

There's a mod for tether distance in the game under mods that you can install.

Yes, this is ruining gameplay with the wife and daughter. We can't do anything because we can't increase tether distance like we used to with classic Ark. This has to be a deliberate decision on the game developer's part. Give us back the option to increase tether distance. If it's too much for our computer, then so be it, we will have to change it back. But, we had tether at 999999 on classic Ark and we were just fine and had great family games in our household. I'm pretty pissed that I've spent $120 for our 3 accounts, to now not be playing together. Tether distance is killing your game.
you know steam has family sharing, right?

Under Game Rules and Rules there is an option to change the tether distance, amend as needed.

Without editing the game file it is 1-3 for a max of 180 m in game and even if you edit the game file manually to say 10000, it still maxes out at 180 m.

I did not see a tether mod under the games mod list.

It's possible there are limits on how high you can set the number and it still be functional. What happens if you set the number in the file to 50? My guess is it still doesn't work, however it might be worth a try. I'm also assuming you're doing this as the person hosting.

are you serious, old ark has what how many dlc's, you all download that even if you don't own it, that's why old ark is that big and this one still on 70, wait till this one has all what the old had, you better have a couple of Terra's space laying around.

It does not matter what number you set the setting, it will always max at 180 meter. My friends and i have tried everything from 1 to 10 and the result was always a 180 meter tether.
