Melee vs. Short range vs long range.
What is the benefit to use melee over short range and vice versa? I feel like it doesn't matter, maybe melee needs less weight or something? Is Short range always unlimited ammo? I need some more in-depth from an experienced player because I am new and I don't wanna restart my campaign because I build my pilots and wanzers wrong when the game releases.

Also about long range feels VERY weak because of limited ammo and terrible accuracy, in the shop there was not a single good CPU for long range and most good ones are short range or melee.

Melee, in this case we're talking about fighting with hand rods than using bare hand, is on par with rifle in terms of power. They also weight a lot less too, which means you can usually equip a body with the highest HP (this is a typical setup for brawler type) But, melee has the disadvantage of going last when facing a gun wielding opponent, which can potentially kill or disarm you before you even get a chance to attack (unless you learned the "First" battle skill, that lets you go first)

Short, or guns is the ideal way to attack. Machine gun fires in a 3 round burst, randomly targets different body parts (though each round has the chance to hit the same part) and is the most accurate. Rifle is a lot less accurate, but when it hits it does massive damage, usually enough to destroy or severely damage a part

Long, or the rocket/missile launchers, are on par with rifle in terms of power, but has the added benefits of no fear of retaliation. It's usually used to snipe targets from afar to soften them up before they get within range of guns/melee

Bazookas are a hybrid of short and long. They can be used in gun range, although their accuracy takes a big hit for doing so, it's better to use them at long range, they can serve as a backup launcher should you run out of ammo

Guns always have unlimited ammo. Early game CPUs are mostly geared towards melee and short, the ones for long won' show up until about half way through the game.

Long becomes very OP very quick once you can buy missiles that fire multiple times.
Melee is more accurate at the beginning.
Short, MG one can hit multiple times, rising the hit chances.

That`s why the higher difficulties are good, probably balances that, even if they can`t be selected at first.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

This is my favorite answer, thank you!
