Art direction?
I'm playing the demo, and mechanically it's sound so far, but the art direction is incredibly distracting. The Wanzers are low poly and rather flat, and they show equipped weapons in attack animations but not in the field, the portraits all have a kind of blurry, grease pencil feel to them, but then there's the more traditional backgrounds, and then there's some of Amano's original art (at least in the campaign select) and it all clashes.

I'm not saying it's bad, although I don't much care for the portraits, but I'm curious what was the intent here? The art lacks a style and it keeps switching from image to image, almost like each asset type was made by an artist that didn't collaborate with any of the other artists.

Like I said, game seems mechanically solid, gonna play with the demo a bit more before I decide if I'm going to pull the trigger, but the art style constantly changing is very distracting.

Keep with it.
But the wanzers look fine to me, from Mission 2 above you get more advanced models, I quite like the Tempest.

It all feels... Cheap, amateurish, in the demo.

Later in the demo it seemed like the Wanzer textures were less flat colors. Maybe it's just either that opening mission or certain other color schemes.

I really love Front Mission but I have to say the art quality is in this remake is severely lacking unfortunately. This game deserved a better visual update, with a stronger art direction that respected and evolved the original better. At least from the demo the game play looks to be intact.

The character art is lifted from the DS portraits, just retraced to be in higher quality.
I feel if they changes the portraits, there's going to be more sh*tstorms.

Ah, that explains it. The lower importance art (anyone in the bar and the Wanzer dealer, I'm looking at you) seems just interpolated with a filter, where the more important characters look reasonable. Some animations, like Natalie's speech, are pretty jarring, but I see the intent. The execution just seems pro-forma. Like they just shoved them all in a program and fixed up only the main characters. I hope in the next two games they take greater care in upscaling old assets.

I'm also curious if the Cyrillic for the CPU not matching the English transliteration for the starter CPU is intentional/original or a typo.
