Monza laptimes McLaren GT3 (base game)
I'm still relatively new to LMU and haven't raced multiplayer yet because I want to practice first and have at least somewhat competitive laptimes.

I only have the base game and am using the McLaren GT3 on Monza. After about 10-15 hours practicing with default setup but various TC/ABS settings, I can only reach a 1:53 (consistent though).

I read that average racers (not aliens) are doing 1:50's

Question: if I go online with 1:53's, am I going to be racing with the last of the last?

One need to be first and one need to be last. What is the problem with that ? But you are more looking at 1:51's, anyone telling you 1:50's is the reference for an average split would highly inflate their ego.

I absolutely don't mind being in the back as long as im having a clean race with the guys that are as slow as me.

Maybe I can knock another second off with more practice but it was really difficult to reach that 1:53 time and I feel like I've reached my limit :(

Mid-to-low 1:51s are quite possible. But don't worry, better times will come automatically with training, and we don't want to become aliens who might even be able to do 1:49s anyway. Besides, at almost 62, I already lack the reaction time to truly be among the fastest. It's much more important to me to ride consistently and without mistakes; that's even driven many faster riders behind me to despair :)
I started at 1:55s and in about 5 races i was able to hit low 52s consistently, and got a mid 1:51 once. This was in split 4/13. Then the week changed. I saw one single sub 1:51 time and with it being the Tues before changeover this will have been with a week's practice.
I guess another way you could look at it is the endurance aspect - smooth driving and reduced tyre wear and fuel consumption can all keep you in the race.

That's the thing don't be hanged up on lap time correlation with racecraft. Shift your mindset. Faster guys are not cleaner, that's not how racing works. Make sure you can be consistent, clean and figure out the best strategy, that's what matters. Doing the occasional 49's won't bring you much if you crash 90% of your laps trying to achieve that.

This can't be upvoted enough, consistency and clean is key to any kind of result. I saw people doing 1 59's in HY around Spa throw it at the first braking and blaming others for their idiocy.
Don't worry, 1:53 for Monza is good enough, above average time at low ranks. But you need to train Fuji at this moment :-)

Yep, Fuji is one of my favourite Asian tracks too

I'm so glad an older racer chimed in. I'm up there with you. And I've also found that consistency in sim racing is indeed super important.

Yeah, I definitely need more practice. I'm pretty fast on Monza with my regular sim but I usually race F4 or touring cars on Monza and really don't have much experience in GT3
