DEV BASED
The first guy cut it to basics. I will give you the detailed update.
The day the Legacy System dropped, a genderqueer player and owner of the game came onto the forums to kindly request the consideration of homosexual marriage within the game. Artur, responding well to the civilized tone of the request, explained that such a thing was VERY unlikely for three reasons.
First is that he didn't care about such things. The marriage system is essentially just a plugin for players to tie into the very rudimentary legacy and life creation systems that the game has in world gen. It is not meant to be a proper NPC interaction system. Artur further stated that even if he wanted to enhance such a system .. to make what he believes would be *good and meaningful* NPC interaction expansions, he would need to completely redesign the entire NPC and conversation system from the ground up. We wouldn't see the benefits of such work for at least half a year.
Second, tying directly to the first, is that he's currently busy working on the War and Undeath systems. These are where his passion and focus lie. As such.. even if he had the energy and materials to render such changes as suggested in item 1.. they would be on the back burner for the next few years at least.
Third. Artur's home nation and the nation he lives in while developing this game, is Poland. As such, even if he genuinely was down for items 1 and 2, the very laws of the land he lives in are hostile to the creation of items of entertainment that deal with or delve into homosexual relationships. He could suffer legal consequences for adding such things to his game.
The OP that asked the question responded well. They understood, mostly, but were still saddened to hear as such.
About half a dozen more individuals whose dispositions can be described as militant, hostile, religiously radical, and utterly anti-social came in and made it very clear that they would attack Artur for the sin of refusing to worship at the altar of Transgenderism and modern degeneracy. His response was to laugh, throw the whole lot of them out of the forums, tell them he won't do ♥♥♥♥ for them, and continue about his day.
They responded in the fashion typical of myopically self obsessed crybabies: They went reeeeeing to their social media circles and called for a public lynching. This lead to a massive backlash against themselves via the now infamous Streisand Effect. The game has seen a large surge of sales in the last few days while the discussion forums here are now drowning in IDPol based ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
Hopefully you find this enlightening.
Man. I barely caught what happened. The day that the expansion dropped I came here specifically to see if one of these "people" would make a ♥♥♥♥ show out of it. The expected demand for gay representation came in the package of one fairly chill individual. I tried to engage them but the conversation derailed so fast that Artur ended up deleting the whole thing before I could get a response from the OP.
Its worth noting that somewhere during the exchange, the idea of modding those kinds of marriages came up, but Artur let it be known that the legacy system was already fairly set in stone where the coding was concerned. Something about how the 0s and 1s generate new life and the expected structure within the code flags.
I was mostly just sad to find out I couldn't try make the DISGUSTING PUTRID MUSHROOM PEOPLE into an agendered set of abominations who just sweat their children into the dirt. But BOY OH BOY, this one is what REALLY incensed the rabid individuals who came in.
It makes me wonder if the gay mafia has tried this stunt with Dwarf Fortress yet. I understand the same issue exists within the code structure of that game as well.
2. dev says that would take a huge expansion of the relationship mechanics and he was mre interested in working on the war mechanics at the mo
3. lgbtq twitter users harass dev as to why he wont add gay marriage
4. dev gets annoyed and says he won bend the knee to the alphabet mafia
5. lgbtq activists get wind and attempt to ruin dev and his game
6. based resistance freedom fighters rally around dev and game making interest explode
7. ?????????
8. profit
thats my understanding from my in depth 10 minutes of research on the matter
They have, and the DF dev capitulated immediately. It's his choice, of course. But the r/roguelike subreddit is one of the cesspools where they are coordinating this harassment campaign and recently posted the interaction between some loon asking for transgender dwarves, side by side with Artur's responses to similar requests (edited in a way that doesn't tell the whole story, as you'd expect).
A trivial thing if the person would have set out on really wanting Gay/Lesbian, they could have simply made a mod to allow it, put it on the workshop instead they go cry about it.
Like, if dev feels like that doesn't work in the theme of his/her game, then so be it.
A lot are tired for these requests, its Add *LGGBTSKDSsomething* or add *Ukraine Language* like, bots spamming that...
Gay relationships in Dwarf Fortress? Oh yes. Absolutely. Since 4.x.
That changes nothing I said. Such a paltry concession as that hardly pleases those people. Dwarf Fortress is
A: Strictly coded around the gender binary IE: Reproductive and chromosomal reality.
B: Permanently bereft of mechanics that allow gay couples to have children.
C: Permanently bereft of mechanics that center on "transgender representation."
With those in mind, and with those all also being at the center of the controversy here, I wonder if they've bothered with trying to hit DF with this ♥♥♥♥.
Makes sense. How bad does it look for DF?
