So you can only max out 3 skills?
that means I wont be taking any crafting skills. Is their a way to stop a skill from progressing, because ive noticed I leveled up thieving just by attacking

Leveling up the skill by using it doesn't eat into your max potential, it eats into the current potential of that skill. So using a knife and getting 1/10 thieving doesn't effect any other skills, but finding a trainer and increasing the maximum does (usually thieving trainers are bone wraith guards)

I've yet to find any trainer that goes all the way to 50, I feel that will need some changing in future patches, so I think you can safely get some crafting skills without worrying. I usually do some tailoring since most NPC tailors are lacking some good mid tier recipes while I've encountered very good armour and weapon smith NPCs in dwarven cities.

With a skill potential cap of 300 you can max 4 skills if that includes the three skills you start with and you only add potential to those three plus one more skill.

If we have a cap on how many skills we can max out, I hope we can use our companion's skill in the upcoming major update.

It would have been nice if we could set the limit instead of the game, some people want the hard experience while others want more freedom in how to play the game. I think a fair system would be to make it be harder to rank up skills after you reach the cap. It would give a dedicated player a way to unlocking something a good way to do it but at the same time still limiting it as you will die in the end due to age. And you can always get killed too.

The game is actually very easily moddable.

For example, you can change max potential (and many other things) just by editing \Soulash 2\data\mods\core_2\character.json.

Switching:
"max_potential": 160,
to:
"max_potential": 260,
would give you 100 more potency (so 400, because it's max_potency + number of skills * 10).

It's all in plain text, and pretty much self explanatory at that.
And even if new update override your file, your character will still work without any issues.

Would still be nice if we can pick the optional potential cap in game, either at world creation, or in some options menu. As a coding iliterate, I know from experience that editing save files without fully understand what I'm doing could end with catastrophic result.

The game already have three different modes. I feel like it makes sense for them to be the three 'main' archetypes, but have an additional option where we can customize each of the difficulty options and have max potential be one of the options.

When steam workshop is released I'm sure that someone will make a mod to increase the skill potential cap so people won't need to edit files themselves.
